Motanka Ukrainian Doll
Motanka Doll - The Mother
Protector of the family, children and pregnant women.
A traditional Ukrainian sacred doll made by Ukrainian artist Bella Voytovich - Sidorova from Terlo, Lviv Region, Ukraine.
Each Motanka doll is unique and one of a kind, made from local and traditional materials using ancient techniques that date back 5000 years.
Motanka comes from the word "motaty" which translates to wind up. This is where fabric is wind around a supporting middle material made out of wood. The use of scissors or stitching is not allowed. The process of making a Motanka is passed down from generation to generation and requires special skills and techniques.
According to Ukrainian culture each doll is sacred and will protect the owner and the family members from harm and bring prosperity.
Motanka dolls do not have any facial features as the ancient belief was that it would tie a persons's soul to it. The face is decorated with a cross which is a pagan symbol for the Sun.
Our talented artist Bella uses only the traditional materials and sources fabrics that are often over 100 years old from local people. She also uses ancient silver coins and freshwater pearls. Her work is very unique and is truly a special piece of art. We are very lucky to showcase Bella's work in our store in Bowral.
